Are You a Candidate?
Fillings are used for a wide range of treatments. Following cavity removal, fillings are used to restore lost tooth structure. Many patients seek composite resin fillings as a replacement for amalgam fillings. If you wish to replace metal fillings with natural-looking composite resin, one of our doctors can replace your old fillings and have you fitted with a cosmetically pleasing substitute that protects your teeth from further decay.
How are fillings placed?
Fillings can be placed during one visit to our office. The procedure usually takes well under half an hour to complete. Once your cavity removal has been performed, one of our doctors will clean and sanitize the treatment site.
Composite Fillings
If you are receiving composite fillings, your dentist will color-match the resin to blend in seamlessly with your smile. Once the pliable material is ready, your doctor will artfully mold the fillings in place before hardening the resin with a special blue light. Once your fillings have hardened, any minor adjustments can be made.
Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam fillings are created by blending metal powders. Once the amalgam is ready, your doctor will fill the cavity space to restore strength and structure to your tooth. Amalgam fillings harden on their own soon after being placed. Your doctor will ensure that your fillings do not interfere with your bite.
Some patients may experience minor side effects like temperature sensitivity in the hours and days following this restorative treatment. These minor side effects will subside as your mouth adjusts to the new fillings.
Tips for Protecting and Maintaining Your Fillings
Maintaining your fillings is straightforward. To ensure that your fillings last for several years or longer, we recommend that our patients:
- Brush thoroughly and at least twice a day
- Avoid sugary foods that can lead to tooth decay
- Reduce consumption of acidic drinks
- Avoid biting hard foods (like ice and raw seeds)
- Visit our office for regular cleanings and checkups
Fillings last around several years on average. When your fillings need to be replaced, one of our doctors can remove and replace your fillings during one convenient visit to our office.
