What is bruxism?

Bruxism, or chronic teeth grinding, often takes place at night, so you may not be aware that you suffer from the condition. However, the symptoms of bruxism are hard to ignore. They can include jaw pain and inflammation,  dental sensitivity, and frequent headaches. Left untreated, bruxism can lead to TMJ Disorder, cracked teeth, and even tooth loss. 47.6% of bruxism sufferers also struggle to stay asleep.

Bruxism can occur for a number of reasons. Anxiety is one of the most common causes of teeth grinding. Medications, genetics, and jaw misalignment are other contributing factors.

Custom Mouthguards

Mouthguards or splints are the most frequent treatment for teeth grinding. Custom appliances fit over the teeth to keep them from touching. Most patients only wear their mouthguards at night, but if you find yourself clenching your jaw at other times, you may benefit from occasional daytime use, as well.

With our digital scanners, Dr. Shergill and his team can design fully customized appliances. They will fit comfortably and will not interfere with a good night’s sleep.

Orthodontics

Dental misalignment can also contribute to bruxism. When your top and bottom teeth don’t come together properly, you may unconsciously grind your jaw, trying to correct the problem. An imbalanced bite can also worsen jaw inflammation by putting uneven pressure on your joints.

At Wren Street Dental, we offer both traditional braces and clear aligners. Dr. Shergill will explain both options and help you find a solution that fits your needs.

Restorative Dentistry

If you have sustained dental damage as a result of your bruxism, Dr. Shergill may recommend restorative dentistry. Crowns are the most common option, since they can fortify damaged teeth and cover up small cracks and chips. If damage is more severe, you may require a treatment such as root canal therapy.

Medications and Lifestyle Changes

Since teeth grinding often results from stress, anxiety management may be helpful. Deep breathing, mindfulness practices, and better sleep routines can all be useful. If your anxiety is particularly high, you may benefit from medications and/or counseling.
