In honor of Oral Health Month, here are five easy tips for keeping your mouth in tip-top shape:

1. Brush in the morning and evening.

Brushing is the foundation of good oral hygiene. It gets rid of plaque, food bits, and bacteria that can cause oral health problems like cavities, bad breath, and periodontal disease. Brush at least two times per day, for at least two minutes each time, with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to brush all areas of your teeth, including the chewing surfaces, front, and back.

2. Floss every day

Flossing and brushing are of equal importance. Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between the teeth and along the gum line, where toothbrushes can’t reach. To floss properly, use a piece of floss about 18 inches long and wrap it around your fingers. Gently move the floss down one tooth and curve it around in a U-shape. Use a fresh section of floss for each tooth.

Floss picks and water flossers are great alternatives to traditional floss.

3. Use mouthwash.

Mouthwash is a great way to kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Look for a mouthwash that has fluoride and antimicrobial agents to help prevent cavities and periodontal disease. Swish your mouth with mouthwash after brushing and flossing, or anytime you want to freshen up.

4. Cut back on sugary and acidic foods.

Foods that are high in sugar and acid can be tough on your oral health. They often cause decay and erosion, and increase the risk of gum disease. Try to reduce your consumption of sugary and acidic foods like candy, soda, and citrus fruits. If you do indulge, make sure to brush and floss afterward.

5. Go to the dentist regularly.

Visiting the dentist on a regular basis is the key to preserving a healthy smile. Dentists and dental hygienists are trained to spot and treat problems early on, before they get worse. Our dentist in Mission BC provides professional cleanings and fluoride treatments to help prevent cavities and gum disease. Aim to visit a dentist biannually, or as often as recommended.
