Dental fillings are one of the most common and important restorative dentistry treatments. A cavity filling can save a tooth that would otherwise be lost to decay. It can keep bacteria from spreading to other teeth, and it can prevent the need for more extensive treatment, such as root canal therapy. But despite their importance and prevalence, there are many myths about dental fillings.

At Wren Street Dental, Dr. Amol Shergill is passionate about patient education. When you visit our Mission, BC, office, he will take all the time you need to answer questions and to clear up any confusion you may have. He firmly believes that, by reducing the fear of the unknown, he can help you feel confident about your care

If you are experiencing dental discomfort, or if you have been told you need restorative dentistry, contact us to schedule a consultation.

Misconception #1: Getting a Cavity Filling Is Very Uncomfortable

The truth: The process of placing a filling is a quick and virtually pain-free experience. Your tooth will be numb during treatment. You should feel little more than a slight pressure as Dr. Shergill removes damaged tissue and places the restoration. And the whole process typically takes less than thirty minutes.

If you are still feeling anxious, you may benefit from sedation dentistry. Be sure to discuss this option prior to your appointment.

Misconception #2: You Only Need a Filling If You Have a Toothache

The truth: Cavities don’t always cause pain. In fact, early stage cavities are often asymptomatic, and it is only until decay has progressed into a full blown infection that patients experience discomfort. At this point, patients typically require root canal therapy or even extraction.

Cavities are frequently found at routine exams, either with a visual examination or with x-rays.

Misconception #3: Metal Fillings Pose Serious Health Risks

The truth: Silver amalgam fillings are made of approximately 42% to 45% mercury. In recent years, there have been claims that the mercury in fillings can raise the risks for numerous health conditions. However, studies show that individuals with silver amalgam fillings do not have significantly increased levels of mercury in their bloodstreams

Nonetheless, the FDA does recommend that certain high-risk individuals, such as pregnant and nursing women, as well as young children, opt for tooth-colored composite fillings instead.

Misconception #4: Once You Get a Filling, You Don’t Have to Worry about Decay in That Tooth

The truth: Decay can still appear around an existing filling. This is why routine dental hygiene is so important, no matter what your health history. Brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits can keep your teeth healthy.

Misconception #5: If You Have a Brown Spot on Your Tooth, You Need a Cavity Filling

The truth: Sometimes, very early stage decay may have stopped. The enamel has since rehardened, leaving a brown spot.

If you have concerns, be sure to discuss these with your dentist. Even if you don’t need a cavity filling, he may suggest a cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of brown spots.
