Surprising Non-Food Habits That Can Cause Cavities

By March 28, 2025April 11th, 2025No Comments

When you think of cavities, you probably picture candy, soda, and other sugary snacks wreaking havoc on your smile. But did you know that some everyday habits can also harm your teeth? Cavities aren’t just caused by the food you eat. Other factors play a big role in tooth decay, which may require restorative dentistry to mend the damage.

Dental damage and decay can be sneaky. So, if you’re experiencing increased tooth sensitivity or searing pain while eating your favorite treats, it’s time to contact Dr. Amol Shergill at Wren Street Dental. Give our dentist in Mission, BC, a call at (604) 820-8702 for restorative care now!

In today’s post, Dr. Shergill dives into some surprising non-food habits that can cause cavities and how to protect your smile from continued damage.

1. Mouth Breathing

Breathing through your mouth might seem harmless, but it can quickly sap moisture from your mouth. And this is bad because saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against cavities

When you breathe through your mouth, your saliva dries up. This creates the perfect environment for tooth decay. If you catch yourself mouth breathing, try to switch to nasal breathing. If it’s due to congestion or other issues, talk to Dr. Shergill for help.

2. Brushing Too Hard

You might think brushing harder means a cleaner mouth. Unfortunately, extremely vigorous brushing can damage your enamel

Enamel is the tough outer layer of teeth that protects them from damage and cavities. However, when enamel wears down, your teeth are likely to develop decay

So, be gentle! And remember:

  • Only use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Steer clear of whitening toothpastes, as they may be more abrasive.
  • Do not scrub vigorously

3. Using Teeth as Tools

We’ve all done it – opened a package or popped a bottle cap with our teeth. But using teeth as utensils can cause small cracks and chips. These cracks and chips can trap bacteria, leading to cavities over time. Next time, reach for scissors or a bottle opener instead.

4. Skipping Flossing

Flossing removes germs and food that are caught between teeth. When you skip flossing, you leave this mix of food and germs on your teeth, which creates plaque build-up and, eventually, painful cavities.

Research indicates that brushing alone isn’t enough to remove cavity-causing plaque. Indeed, flossing with string floss, interdental brushes, or oral irrigators is necessary to keep your smile healthy, strong, and free from cavities and bad breath.

5. Grinding Your Teeth

Grinding or clenching your teeth, especially while slumbering, can wear down enamel. And weaker enamel means more risk of cavities

So, if you think you might be unconsciously clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth, talk to Dr. Shergill. He can help you get a custom-designed night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep.

6. Not Drinking Enough Water

Hydration is essential for your teeth because water helps rinse away food particles, acids, and bacteria. When you don’t drink enough water, your mouth becomes dry. This can lead to an increased risk of cavities. So, keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day.
